It seems that close to Timisoara there’s a famous wine cellar known as Recas. And, good news, the guys organizing SYNASC took us there.
The place is impressive. All the surrounding area is covered by vines, arranged in mathematical order. The cellar looks very good and has the potential to become an important tourist attraction, especially being so close to the Western border.
We were offered a wine tasting. Five types of wine were successively served to us, while a guide from the cellar told us about its history and the characteristics of each wine. A surprising thing was that the guide didn’t speak English (which is not very smart if you’re trying to attract foreign tourists). On top of this, his speech was mostly on the boring side. I’m sure the cellar’s history has some cool stories (we’re in Dracula’s country, ffs), not just “sold by X and bought by Y in 1452”.
After everybody figured out which of the five wines they liked most, food came. First – goulash (Hungarian influence), then chicken breast in cherry sauce (apparently an Austrian influence). Delicious!
Something that could not have missed was the traditional dances. In this case, they started with a little hora of girls, crushing grapes with their feet. After the grapes were done, most people joined the dance.
The evening ended with a visit to the wine shop. It seems the wines were greatly appreciated, judging by the amount of bottles everybody was buying.
