Skiing down Malinului Valley

A heatwave is currently approaching Romania, so let’s talk about skiing. This was day 2 of the alpine valley skiing event organized by Asociatia Montana Carpati. I’ve already written about the first day here.

Sunday morning. Crappy weather. Crappy weather forecast for the rest of the day. Eh.. the show must go on. So we boarded the cablecar and climbed to Babele where… surprise! Nice and sunny weather. Since we skied down Alba the day before, we couldn’t downgrade to skiing Morarului. So we went on Malinului instead.

Now please open the third image above. That’s where we entered the valley. While you can’t see over the edge, if you’re imagining something near vertical, you’re pretty much right. It was ridiculously steep, more than any slope I’ve skied before. Yet, being pretty wide, I was able to ski it safely (even though with the lowest possible ratings in terms of style and technique).

What can I say more about Malinului? It was scary. Thank god for the fog that hid the gaping void beneath us – seeing just 20 meters in front has its advantages. To add to the out-of-my-comfort-area experience, we had to rappel down a big rock at the base of the valley.
