Calimani Ski Touring Cup 2016

Took place in “Cupa Calimani la Ski de Tura” two years ago and had a very good experience. Despite the 7 hour long drive there, I decided to return for this year’s edition. This was a winter with very little snow. I think it snowed more in Bucharest than in the Bucegi Mountains. Hoping that conditions were better in the Calimani Mountains, we left Bucharest on Friday afternoon and around Continue…

Fall Colors

Yeah, I know it’s almost spring, but, as usual, I have some catching up to do. It was towards the end of October. Mostly sunny, mostly warm weather and a good opportunity to enjoy fall forest colors. Saturday morning we arrived by train to Buzau. The plan was to take another 20k train ride to Berca, but we noticed we would probably arrive there faster by bike, so we set Continue…

Mountain Biking Ion Trandafir Style

October had some busy weekends. And that’s thanks to two rides hosted by Ion Trandafir: 60/3000+ and Leaota Casual. 60/3000+ has a self-explanatory title. The track is roughly 60 km long with a total climb of around 3100-3200 meters. So from the start you see it has a lot of climbing and, given the relatively short length, it’s steep. Crazy steep. It’s not a course for most people. It’s a Continue…

Two Marathons in Two Days – MPC and BIM

Preparing for some future challenges, an important test was running two back-to-back marathons. So I signed up for the top two running events in Romania (which happen to take place in consecutive days): – Piatra Craiului Marathon (10th edition): 38 km with about 2200 meters climbing, going around and over the namesake mountain – Bucharest Marathon (8th edition): 42 km on a new and very twisty route in and around the Continue…

Camping on the Piatra Craiului Ridge

It was my second time on the “La Lanturi” and “Northern Ridge” trails in Piatra Craiului. These are some of the hardest (and most famous) marked trails in Romania. If last time I did them in one go from Curmatura to Spirlea, this time we planned to camp right on the ridge and enjoy the views, calmness and remoteness of the mountain. Left Plaiul Foii at about 2 pm, after some Continue…
