Bike Pentathlon… Fail!

This biking season started with fail number 1 (Cara vs nature), then recently I had fail number 2 (broken cablecar). Let’s hope that today’s third (remember 3 is a mythical number with various occult interpretations) fail, which ends the biking season, will also end the failure streak.

So what’s up with this pentathlon? Cute event, with a few hundred bikers (the organisers would even give you a bike if you didn’t have one) getting together to promote this means of transport.

First trial – getting from the northern part of Bucharest (Herastrau Park) to the People’s Palace (Izvor Park). With police escort! They gave us priority in every junction. I think I crossed about 10 red lights, while confused drivers were waiting for the huge line of bikes to pass. Finally, drivers waiting for bikes to pass. Didn’t believe I would see that in Bucharest!

The second trial was called Slow Bike. You had to ride as slowly as possible without stopping. It was piece of cake. Andreea and me passed it easily.

But the third trial was the hardest. First, you had to pass through some gates. Sounds easy, but it was tough. Andreea didn’t make it. I almost fell at the last one, but eventually I made it. Then I had to pick up some flags, therefore biking with one hand – not a problem. And finally I had to pull 3 car tyres tied to my bike. Unfortunately, I only managed to go halfway before being disqualified for stopping. Damn..

The final 2 trials seemed easier. 7 minutes of cardio on a gym bike – everybody passed. Mounting a wheel on a bike – straightforward.

All in all, a fun event. They offered 10 bikes to the first 10 bikers. The grand prize was a cute city bike, complete with a basket of flowers and a personal butler:

Oh, and a word of advice for kids reading this blog: STAY AT SCHOOL or you will end up like Raify the yellow horse. Seeing him made me forget of failing the tyre pulling trial. I remembered how awesome I actually am! Pretty much everybody is awesome compared to a guy dressed as a yellow horse.
