Marathon 7500 and the 3000 meter barrier

It’s been a while since I raced the short route in an endurance competition. But with Marathon 7500, you should try and understand the subtle humor behind what the organizers call the “Hobby” category. The track for the long route, what they call “Elite”, is 90 km long with 7500 meters in elevation. While technically a trail running contest, with these numbers it’s more like speed hiking for most. 7500 is a Continue…

Ski Mountaineering School – Part I

Back in March I took part in a Ski Mountaineering School organized by Ciprian Lolu and the guys from AMC. It was my second winter activity with them, after last year’s alpine valley skiing (part I and part II). It was an initiation event, although getting initiated in something hard core is still pretty.. medium core (or something like that). Friday morning greeted us with sunny weather. Unfortunately, the snow didn’t Continue…

Calimani Ski Touring Cup 2016

Took place in “Cupa Calimani la Ski de Tura” two years ago and had a very good experience. Despite the 7 hour long drive there, I decided to return for this year’s edition. This was a winter with very little snow. I think it snowed more in Bucharest than in the Bucegi Mountains. Hoping that conditions were better in the Calimani Mountains, we left Bucharest on Friday afternoon and around Continue…

Fall Colors

Yeah, I know it’s almost spring, but, as usual, I have some catching up to do. It was towards the end of October. Mostly sunny, mostly warm weather and a good opportunity to enjoy fall forest colors. Saturday morning we arrived by train to Buzau. The plan was to take another 20k train ride to Berca, but we noticed we would probably arrive there faster by bike, so we set Continue…

Mountain Biking Ion Trandafir Style

October had some busy weekends. And that’s thanks to two rides hosted by Ion Trandafir: 60/3000+ and Leaota Casual. 60/3000+ has a self-explanatory title. The track is roughly 60 km long with a total climb of around 3100-3200 meters. So from the start you see it has a lot of climbing and, given the relatively short length, it’s steep. Crazy steep. It’s not a course for most people. It’s a Continue…
