Ski Mountaineering School – Part II

For Saturday, Ciprian Lolu prepared something special: a climb up Horoabei Gorge. I’ve read about this place and I was curious and anxious about it. Being winter, we were expecting lots of ice, creating a difficult and treacherous terrain. We were working in teams of 3 again, each of us climbing by ice ax and crampons, with the skis strapped on the back. The crampons proved useful even before entering the Continue…

Marathon 7500 and the 3000 meter barrier

It’s been a while since I raced the short route in an endurance competition. But with Marathon 7500, you should try and understand the subtle humor behind what the organizers call the “Hobby” category. The track for the long route, what they call “Elite”, is 90 km long with 7500 meters in elevation. It was my second winter activity with them, after last year’s alpine valley skiing (part I and part II). It was an initiation event, although getting initiated in something hard core is still pretty.. medium core (or something like that). Friday morning greeted us with sunny weather. Unfortunately, the snow didn’t Continue…

Granada – Kayak

Granada is similar to Leon in some ways. It’s a colonial city, with similar architecture – grand Catholic churches and houses with inner courtyards. Read a lot of stuff online about safety issues in Nicaragua. Throughout our trip Continue…

Leon – Volcano Boarding

We got to Leon and we knew what we wanted to see: volcanoes! But first let’s check out what the city has to offer. It was finally a city worth seeing, unlike what we’ve experienced in Costa Rica. Sadly for the Nicaraguans, all the sights were from the colonial period. I had the feeling people now weren’t adding anything to the place, they were at most preserving the past. Visited the Continue…
