Biking Vrancea’s Wilderness – Part I

By wilderness I’m not referring to the American meaning (nature reserve), but to the Romanian one (going back in time). Alex prepared an interesting route, taking us across the Carpathians, from Transylvania to Moldavia. The plan was for 3 days of biking to remote places. On day one, after two trains, we were at the starting point, in Intorsura Buzaului. We went full speed ahead, as the first day was Continue…

Retezat

Retezat Mountains – such a treat! Route: Day 0: – got in the car at 5pm – stayed in traffic for more than an hour – caught a hailstorm – got supplies from the supermarket and sporting goods store – barely made it out of the flooded parking lot – drove past midnight on one of the spookiest (non)roads I’ve seen – Obarsia Lotrului to Petrosani – arrived at 2am Continue…

Ciucas

2 day hike in Ciucas. Started in Cheia, went up Culmea Buzaianu towards Varful Gropsoarele, then Varful Muntele Rosu followed by a night at Cabana Muntele Rosu. The second day we visited Cabana Ciucas, then followed Culmea Bratocea down to Pasul Bratocea. The first day was rainy, at least before getting out of the forest. We did see a bit of sun, but then we were engulfed by clouds again Continue…

B4M Day 2 – A Storm of Rocks

Early morning in Stoenesti, AG. Woke up and ate the traditional breakfast our hosts from Cabana din Brazi prepared. Packed all our stuff and biked to the start area. This day, the race would take us up one of the longest continuous offroad climbs in Romania, from Stoenesti (~600m altitude) to close to Leaota Peak (~2050m). The climb was constant and not that steep. After I found my rhythm, I Continue…

B4M Day 1 – A Song of Mud and Mist

The worst possible way to describe Bike 4 Mountains would be a walk in the park. Ever since the thought of taking part formed in my mind, I was looking towards the start day with both dread and excitement. The spring mountain bike training season didn’t go very well due to all the rains, so I had to make do with just a few laps over the MoontimeBike course. On Continue…
